Some bilingual pairs worked really well. Some other pairs we had to adjust several times. However, we hit a wall when there was no chemestry between the partners. Yes! You need chemestry in order for any people pair to work, including bilingual pairs. At the end of the day, or should I say the school year, we had better ideas about how to pair up students.
